After leaving the country to protest capitalism at the G20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany, Mayor Bill de Blasio was snubbed by NYPD officers during a funeral for the assassinated cop Miosotis Familia on Tuesday.
Thousands of officers and citizens packed the World Changers Church in the Bronx to lay Familia, the single mother of 3, to rest.
Even more stood outside viewing monitors broadcasting the service.
When the mayor took the stage, many NYPD officers turned their backs on him as a show of protest for his decision to leave the country in the immediate aftermath of the Familia’s death.
During his unannounced trip, De Blasio spoke at a protest against the then ongoing G-20 summit of world leaders in Hamburg. Bizarrely, he used his appearance at the anti-establishment demonstration to laud his own police force.
The trip meant that he missed a vigil for officer Familia on Saturday. It outraged New York City residents and caught the attention of President Trump criticized it on Twitter.
de Blasio’s presences at the memorial service for the slain officer was an obvious attempt to redeem himself.
He gave a very impassioned speech which called for the rising support of police officers.
However, the words did not seem to resonate with many of the officers attending the funeral.
Wall the NYC mayor wrong to leave the country to protest at the G20 Summit?
