The Charlotte Fire Department arrived at the scene in the city’s uptown neighborhood around 4:30 p.m. ET, a spokesperson told NBC News.
A bomb squad was also responding to the device, described as the size of a shoe box, according to NBC affiliate WCNC.
“Out of abundance of caution, we’ve evacuated the building, bomb squad coming to investigate, determine if anything nefarious with that package or anything suspicious,” CMPD spokesman Rob Trufano told reporters. “Once we get some resolution, we’ll get people back in the building.”
