Photographs of the black bear illegally hunted by the dentist who killed Cecil the lion have emerged 10 years after he tried to cover them up.
The images, obtained byABC through a Freedom of Information Act request, show Dr Walter Palmer standing above the animal he slayed with a bow and arrow in Wisconsin in 2006.
After posing with the bear’s carcass, he allegedly bribed the guides with $20,000 so they would lie about his criminal act and then made false statements to federal prosecutors during their investigation.
But the embattled Minnesota native was eventually caught, tried and pleaded guilty – but only paid a $3,000 fine after signing a plea agreement.
Palmer, who has become one of the most hated men in America, killed the bear in an area where he didn’t have a permit to hunt.
He gained notoriety around the world last month after it was revealed he was responsible for killing the beloved 13-year-old lion during an illicit hunt in Zimbabwe.
Since his name was released, he has kept a low profile as both the American and Zimbabwean governments consider legal action against him.
In the past weeks, an array of animals he has killed – including moose, deer, buffalo, mountain lions and a polar bear – have also emerged.
And it was also revealed he ran into trouble with the law after killing the black bear.
In 2008, Palmer pleaded guilty to felony charges of making false statements to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service about the bear.
