Guns fly off the shelves in New England

Columbine survivors react to Newtown massacreGun manufacturers and retailers throughout New England are struggling to keep up with surging demand as buyers, worried their options may soon be limited, snap up firearms and ammunition.

Shops say they have sold out of many popular gun models, including variations of the AR-15-style rifle used in last month’s mass shootings in Newtown, Conn. Some retailers have resorted to capping the number of bullets customers can buy in an effort to preserve dwindling inventories, or taken to marking up prices.

The sharp increase in sales is fueled by the looming prospect of greater controls on firearms. Proposals to further restrict or regulate ownership are pending nationally and in Massachusetts.

The surge in purchases can be gauged by the wave of background checks required for prospective gun buyers. Nine of the 10 busiest days for background checks ever recorded by the FBI were in the past two months. In December alone, the agency performed 25,251 checks for would-be buyers in Massachusetts — an increase of 73 percent from a year earlier.

“People are afraid of what Obama is going to do,” said Ted Oven, owner of Northeast Trading Co. in North Attleborough. “People who were going to buy in the spring are rushing to buy now.”

On a recent day, the store’s display wall featured only two AR-15-style rifles. Oven said about 60 customers have requested similar guns that have yet to arrive. He also submitted orders for $1 million worth of guns and accessories at a trade show in Connecticut this month, but no one could guarantee a delivery date.

Johnny Donnelly, a firearms instructor from Woburn, said he had to add a second four-hour firearms safety class on Sunday to accommodate demand from new gun owners.

“It’s definitely the highest interest I’ve ever seen,” said Donnelly, who hopes to open a gun store in Massachusetts this year. “Even people I didn’t know were interested in firearms are talking about it.”

Who keeps writing these articles. The AR-15 was not used in Newtown at the school. The children were killed by handguns. The AR-15 was later found in the trunk of the car. It is suspected as having been used to kill his Mother, but not substantiated.

The AR-15 myth is being promoted by the Lame-stream media to continue their war on what they call assault weapons. Which an AR-15 IS NOT!

    • David J. Stuehr

Check again. The gun in the car was a shotgun. He did use the AR.

      • bleedinell

        You’re wrong.

      • cdr479bde

Sorry, not true. No shotgun was found in the car or at the school. The AR was in the trunk of the car.

      • brianjconway

        David. Your are incorrect..

    • Sagebrush6

This is being pushed by both the lame stream media and the anti-gun mongrels.

Actually, what difference does it make what kind of weapon was used. The 2nd Amendment covers one and all. Regardless of weapon, it takes a mentally impaired individual to carry out this (and other) pathetic show of cowardace.

      • cdr479bde

Actually it does make a difference. The Lame-stream media uses the reference to continue to demonize the AR-15 and glean public support for its demise. Liberals have no idea what the meaning of Assault Rifle is so they continue to demonize the AR-15. As a point of reference the AR in the term AR-15 does not mean Assault Rifle. It stands for ArmaLite Firearms.

It has always been said that people vote with their pocketbooks. They’re voting now, with as much as they can spend, to empty the shelves of every gun store in the country. It should be clear that folks are not thinking about turning in their guns to please the Lib/socialists.

REMEMBER, above all, it is YOUR responsibility to protect your home and family.

You know this can only end one way, Obama doesn’t have enough sense to back down.

High capacity, high velocity weapons are the protected weapons in the 2nd amendment.

When there is a civil disturbance you want the responders to be armed as well as criminals or terrorists. In 1776 single shot flint locks were state of the art. Today is is the Bushmaster or AR15.

The AR15 is essentially a .223 or 22 Caliber weapon designed to shoot people not deer. Ammunition for it is full metal jacket Geneva Convention approved. Hunting ammunition has an expanding bullet designed to quickly kill game animals.

The argument by gun control advocates is childishly ignorant.

      AMEN to that!

As proof of the founder’s intent Tench Coxe, of Pennsylvania may have stated it most clearly when he penned – “Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves? Congress have no power to disarm the militia. Their swords and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an American . . . . The unlimited power of the sword is not in the hands of either the federal or state governments, but, where I trust in God it will ever remain, in the hands of the people.” — The Pennsylvania Gazette, Feb. 20, 1788

“Their swords and every other terrible implement of the soldier, are the birthright of an American .” shows that the founders and ratification convention delegates DEMANDED, as a condition of ratification that ALL American citizens be armed at least as well as any soldier or other enemy they might have to confront.

The Pennsylvania delegates actually proposed that the Amendment necessary should state – “That the people have a right to bear arms for the defense of themselves and their own state, or the United States, or for the purpose of killing game; and no law shall be passed for disarming the people or any of them, unless for crimes committed, or real danger of public injury from individuals…”

If unfamiliar with the man this will help –

an AR15 is multi-purpose but works well for defence and also hunting of varmints with the proper hollow point ammo.

It’s about time the liberal Yankees in the northeast woke up ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

    • brianjconway

Gene. It’s not the liberals waking up. They are as or more ignorant than ever. It is the conservatives stocking up.

God All Mighty people just don’t follow the stupid unconstitutional laws, they can not enforce them. We will win in the courts. All the laws pertaining to guns are unconstitutional. UNCONSTITUTIONAL GET IT!!!!!!

READ about the how the guvmitt is trying to control the raw materials for ammo manufacture thus creating shortages and price increases! i dont believe for a minute that its the guns they are after BUT ITS THE AMMO! nice clubs and funny lookin hammers with no ammo!! KEEP ALERT PATRIOTS!

  • Silas Longshot

This is not isolated to New England, every gun store in the US is getting the same volume of business. AND common ammo is mostly unavailable. You ‘roll your own’ ammo, like me, even those supplies are all gone, locally and on line. Last night I searched 35 web stores that sell reloading supplies, NOT ONE had common primers and some didn’t even have bullets or brass for reloading either except for odd large caliber hunting material. Some of these used to have cases of 5000 primers for sale, so were capable of massive volume sales. You can’t be picky about brand name preferences when you can find ammo, even if it’s “brand X”, you better be getting it.

This nation is sensing trouble, unless you’re a clueless liberal, and is getting ready for what’s coming.

    Prepare while you can.

Gun control isn’t about gun control – it’s about people control. Freedom is the absence of legislation.
