Never bring a knife to a gun fight. Bet a few of those citizens witnessing this wished they had a gun.
A belligerent man waving an eight-inch knife died Wednesday in a barrage of police bullets after a wild confrontation outside a Hell’s Kitchen supermarket, police said.
The 46-year-old man pulled the blade after a sidewalk wrestling match with one cop that followed an argument inside the store as he tried to buy beer at 8:20 a.m., said NYPD Deputy Chief James O’Neill.
The showdown escalated quickly after a retired officer reported the dispute between the man and a cashier at the Food Emporium on Eighth Ave. and 49th St.
“I was working and I heard what sounded like gunshots, four to five gunshots,” said coffee shop worker Dennis Sandusky. “About 30 seconds later I saw people running down the street, yelling and screaming.”
According to O’Neill, two responding officers fired nine shots at the man. The gunplay occurred near the Broadway theaters housing the hit shows “Wicked” and “The Book of Mormon.”
The unidentified suspect was swearing at customers in the store and acting aggressively toward Food Emporium workers before his death.
