Harriet Tubman deserves to be on a postage stamp, that is for certain, but does Andrew Jackson deserve to be demoted because of political correctness? He did help found our nation after all…
Former presidential candidate Ben Carson has questioned plans to put abolitionist Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill.
The Republican said Andrew Jackson, who is currently on the bill, should not be moved in the redesign because he was ‘a tremendous president’.
He suggested instead that Miss Tubman, an African-American who helped rescue slaves, should be put on a $2 note.
Mr Carson made the comments while speaking to Fox Business News about the plans, which were confirmed by Treasury Secretary Jack Lew on Wednesday.
He told the programme he ‘loved’ Miss Tubman but, after describing Mr Jackson, asked: ‘In honor of that we kick him off the money?’
Donald Trump, the current Republican frontrunner, meanwhile described the move as ‘pure political correctness.’
‘I think Harriet Tubman is fantastic,’ he said during a town hall event broadcast live on NBC’s ‘Today’ show, but ‘I would love to leave Andrew Jackson and see if we can maybe come up with another denomination.’
