An apparent copycat terrorist appeared in Antwerp, Belgium on Thursday. What he wanted to do was very reminiscent of the attacks in Germany and France last year and most recently in London just this week. The suspect is Mohamed R. attempted to run over people in Antwerp’s main shopping area on De Meir.
His attempt failed, thankfully, and Belgian police released this statement:
“The suspect is Mohamed R., born on May 8, 1977, of French nationality and a resident of France… The vehicle was driving at high speed on De Meir. Our army colleagues spotted it and tried to bring the vehicle to a halt. But the driver broke free and drove through the red light towards the port quays… Different arms were found in the boot – bladed weapons, a riot gun and a container of liquid that is still unidentifiable.”
Mohamed was described as a French national of North-African descent. At the time he was detained, he was found to have several weapons with him.
People did see Mohamed’s reckless driving and, with London still fresh in their minds, scrambled to get out of the way. One officer had this to say, “A man in camouflage was taken away. According to eyewitnesses, many people had to jump out of the way of the speeding car.”
French President Francois Hollande also made a statement on the attack, stating it was “an attempted terrorist attack . . . He was looking to kill people and to cause something dramatic.”
At least they aren’t trying to hide that this was a terror attack. Let’s be grateful this one was stopped before anyone was hurt.
