Buzzfeed’s Andrew Kaczynski posted a ‘listicle’ entitled, “7 Nelson Mandela Quotes You Probably Won’t See In The U.S. Media”. Ironically, most of these quotes were actually taken from U.S. media sources. But then again neither Andrew nor Buzzfeed have ever been what you might call “reliable” for factuality.
And this was proved again when analysing the list in question, specifically number six, regarding (you guessed it) Israel.
Kaczynski quotes Mandela as having said:
Israel should withdraw from all the areas which it won from the Arabs in 1967, and in particular Israel should withdraw completely from the Golan Heights, from south Lebanon and from the West Bank.
And indeed Mandela did say this. But here’s a quote you won’t see from Buzzfeed about Mandela’s comments about the Middle East conflict. A quote that harnesses the truth behind why Israel is so rightly nervous about its security and its neighbours. He said:
I understand completely well why Israel occupies these lands. There was a war.
And further to that, which will really stick in the mouths of the revisionists, Mandela said:
I cannot conceive of Israel withdrawing if Arab states do not recognize Israel within secure borders.
Now many have noted that Mandela was “no friend of Israel”, and if you buy that narrative (which both pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian activists push) then surely it lends even further to the credibility of the man’s words regarding…
