An attack has reportedly taken place near Chambers Street and West Side Highway in lower Manhattan area.
So far two people are feared dead and multiple injured after a shooting and truck ramming assault occurred.
Via the Daily Mail: The first report of the incident came over the NYC police scanner radio at around 3.20pm.
The NYPD has confirmed one person has been arrested in connection with the incident but investigations are ongoing.
At least one officer has been shot and is expected to make a recovery. The details of other injuries are not known.
Singer Josh Groban also tweeted after hearing ‘gun shots’ while out walking his dog.
‘Oh my god I just heard gun shots and ran with my dog. Downtown. F***,’ he said.
Report after report of the attack are suggesting the truck intentionally drove into the bicycle land and mowed down the cyclists and people walking.
The details are bound to change as this is a developing story. Check back with GJWGH for an update as more details come in.
CBS News is reporting that eight people have been killed and 11 others seriously injured. After the attack with the truck, the terrorist — known as Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov, 29 — “emerged from the vehicle screaming and brandishing imitation firearms before he was shot by police. The suspect was wounded and taken into custody.”
Mayor Bill de Blasio said: “This was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians,” calling it “a very painful day in our city.”
“Today there was a loss of innocent life in lower Manhattan,” NYPD commissioner James O’Neill also commented.
Saipov is from Uzbekistan and migrated to the U.S. in 2010. He settled in Tampa, Florida.
It is being reported that Saipov yelled “Allahu Akbar” after he mowed down innocent Americans with his rental truck.
Governor Andrew Cuomo is calling it a “lone wolf” attack, with no apparent link to a bigger terror plot. One officer is being praised for his work by Cuomo, O’Neill and de Blasio after he was able to stop the terrorist; taking him into custody before further harm was done.
Via CBS: The vehicle entered the pedestrian/bike path a few blocks north of Chambers Street on Manhattan’s west side. The truck drove down the bike path for about four blocks, striking cyclists and pedestrians before veering back into traffic lanes and striking a school bus and another vehicle.
Four people on board the school bus were injured, CBS New York reports. Officials said Tuesday they were two adults and two children.
The suspect then emerged brandishing what police called “imitation firearms.” A pellet gun and a paintball gun were recovered at the scene, O’Neill said.
The lone officer who was able to stop him shot Saipov in the abdomen, where the suspect was transported to the hospital.
Six people were pronounced dead at the scene and two others died at the hospital, officials said. Eleven others suffered injuries that were described as serious but not life-threatening.
