The CIA sent tens of millions of dollars to Afhgan President Hamid Karzai’s office in order to gain access to his inner circle.
The cash payments are the first known to be given directly to President Karzai.
TheNew York Times reports that the U.S government’s payments were sent secretly over a decade.
The amounts are said to have been made more frequently and on a larger scale than suspected.
The only other country that is known to have given money to President Karzai, is Iran.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai admitted in 2010 that once or twice a year Iran gave his office between £445,000 and £620,000 for official presidential expenses – and that Washington provided ‘bags of money’ because his office lacks funds.
