This is going to make things real ugly at the up coming convention. Cruz now has 545 delegates, while Trump has 743.
Donald Trump has had it with the GOP’s delegate selection system that last weekend gave Ted Cruz the win in Colorado even though he was not directly elected by the state’s Republican voters.
‘The system is rigged. It’s crooked,’ Trump declared on Fox and Friends this morning.
He said later in the segment: ‘This was a political hack deal, like so much of our country. This is what our country’s all about I guess.’
Cruz secured all 34 delegates in Colorado in a landslide victory, pushing the GOP further in the direction of a contested national convention in Cleveland, Ohio, this summer.
The Texas senator took advantage of the state’s complicated rules for distributing delegates to direct them all his way.
‘The people of Colorado had their vote taken away from them by the phony politicians. Biggest story in politics. This will not be allowed!’ Trump said last night on Twitter.
Cruz allotted 21 delegates by Friday night, and swept the additional 13 on Saturday. An additional three votes at the convention will come from unpledged party leaders.
‘How is it possible that the people of the great State of Colorado never got to vote in the Republican Primary? Great anger – totally unfair!’ Trump declared on Twitter.
He claimed on Fox and Friends that ‘the people out in Colorado are going nuts. They’re marching, they’re having a lot of problems out there because of this.’
DailyMail.com could find no evidence to support that claim, however.
Trump won the popular vote in Louisiana and South Carolina but lost out on delegates to Cruz there because his team was unfamiliar with the rules.
‘I win a state in votes and then get non-representative delegates because they are offered all sorts of goodies by Cruz campaign. Bad system!’ Trump complained yesterday on Twitter.
This morning he said, ‘That’s not the way democracy is supposed to work.
‘They offer them trips. They offer ’em all sorts of things…What kind of system is this?’
And it’s not just happening on the Republican side, Trump argued. Bernie Sanders keeps winning states, yet he’s losing the election to Hillary Clinton.
‘I’m coming in to do something positive, I’m an outsider, the system’s rigged, I see it. I see it now 100 percent,’ Trump said on Fox and Friends.
