A sorority at Samford University has come under fire for its decision to feature a black man eating a watermelon next to people picking cotton on its T-shirts.

The Alpha Delta Pi chapter at the school in the Birmingham, Ala., suburbs included the offensive images on a vintage-style map of their state.

Samford University said it had denied the sisters’ request to make the shirts for their spring formal, but they made them anyway.

Ensuing outrage over the images’ racist connotations led to rapid-fire apologies from the university, the sorority and its international organization.

“In selecting the T-shirt, we failed to focus on the specific images in the design,” ADPi Samford chapter president Lauren Hammond said, adding the shirts will be destroyed.
