Illinois: County Declares Itself ‘Sanctuary County’ for Gun Owners

In a brilliant move Effingham County of Illinois has officially labeled itself a “sanctuary county,” but not for illegal immigrants, the sanctuary is for gun owners.

On Monday the county announced its change, stating they refuse to enforce any new state law that might “unconstitutionally restrict the Second Amendment.” The resolution passed by a vote of eight to one, reports Fox News Insider.

David Campbell, a board member of the county, said this was a move to fight against the constant encroachment of citizen’s Second Amendment right. “[We] decided it’s time for someone to take a hard stand,” he said.

The county State’s Attorney Bryan Kibler informed reporters the idea spawned from the left’s use of “sanctuary areas” throughout the county to protect illegal immigrants. He said, “So we thought … why don’t we just make this a sanctuary county like they would for undocumented immigrants. So we did flip the script on it.”

What motivated the vote was Deerfield, IL., recent decision to not only remove “assault weapons” from residents’ home — facing up to $1,000 daily fines if they don’t comply — but to give police the power to confiscate such weapons after the ban is in effect.
