Mother Names Child “Messiah” and Judge Orders Her to Change Child’s Name

renameNEWPORT, TN — The government has the power to rename your children for you. That’s what one family found out recently in Tennessee.

Judge Ballew unexpectedly ordered that Jaleesa Martin change her 7-month-old son’s name from “Messiah DeShawn Martin” to “Martin DeShawn McCullough.”

The judge said that she “thought out into the future” and renamed the boy because “it could put him at odds with a lot of people.” The word Messiah has strong religious connotations, meaning a promised savior of humankind.
