Shooting at Chicago Hospital: Four in Critical Condition, Gunman Dead [UPDATE]

A shooting at Chicago’s Mercy Hospital has left four people in critical condition and the suspected gunman dead.

Chicago police have released details on a shooting at Mercy Hospital. They have stated four people are in critical condition and the suspected gunman is dead.

Of the victims, one is a police officer and another a hospital employee according to Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

The shooting in the city’s South Side unfolded around 3:20 p.m., and officers were searching the hospital.

It was not immediately clear whether the shooter took his own life or was killed by police.

Guglielmi tweeted out a confirmation of the incident, saying, “Reports of multiple victims from incident at 26th and Michigan. Please avoid area.”

Christine Calace, a police department spokeswoman, told USA TODAY that preliminary reports indicate shots were fired inside and outside the hospital building.

Guglielmi also tweeted that police were “doing a methodical search of Mercy hospital. At least one possible offender is shot.”

Steven White, a patient being treated for dehydration at the hospital, recounted what he heard during the shooting. He said that it started outside the hospital near the emergency room entrance. “It was, ‘Pow, pow, pow,”’ White said. Through his window, White also saw people lying on the ground. The gunman then fired two shots at a person lying there.

“You see stuff like this on TV, but to see someone so cold-hearted,” White said. “It was like he had no remorse.”

After that, the gunman ran into the hospital with police chasing him. White thought he heard another half dozen shots after that.

A reported mass evacuation happened at the hospital with the neighborhood having an increased police presence. Emergency crews were also called in.

Witness James Gray said it looked like the shooter was choosing victims randomly.

Details on the shooter have not been released at this time.

**UPDATE**

Police have confirmed that an officer and two other victims are now dead. According to Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, the other two victims were a doctor and a pharmaceutical assistant.

Guglielmi confirmed that Officer Samuel Jimenez was the victim in the shooting.

It is still unclear if the shooter took his own life or was taken out by police.
