Applications to work at the Dallas Police Department have skyrocketed since a sniper shot and killed five officers.

The department received 467 applications in the 12 days after the July 7 attacks. A gunman disrupted what had been a peaceful protest against recent police shootings of Alton Sterling in Louisiana and Philando Castile in Minnesota.

Dallas police officers Lorne Ahrens, Michael Krol, Michael Smith and Patrick Zamarripa died in the shootings, as well as Dallas Area Rapid Transit officer Brent Thompson. The gunman wounded nine other officers and two civilians.

The Dallas Police Department received 38.9 applications per day on average between July 8 and July 20, according to a statement released Friday.
